In a telephone interview with the media from Honduras today, FFB Vice President Bernaldino Pech said “It’s a historic victory for Belize, for our boys, having shown the level that Belizean football has come to – tremendous improvement. People who know about football, who saw the game, are able to appreciate it is not the brute force type of football that they used to play in years past, but it’s a game that is flowing – there is movement of the ball and our players displayed great confidence. It is historic to be able to win six points out of six in a world cup qualifier.
“I must also give thanks to our friends in Honduras who really assisted us – the City of San Pedro Sula and their sports department who were able to assist us with the facilities and all other details needed for the game. Coming back to the game, the Montserrat Team – they are big, they are strong – and so our boys moved the ball pretty well among them and around them.
“The goal scorers for the national team were the same three goal scorers from our practice game a few days earlier with Marathon. They were Danny Jimenez, Deon McCauley and Luis Mendez. We move onto a group of four.We don’t know who our opponents are. There will be a draw on the thirtieth of this month in Rio De Janeiro and on that date we will know who our three rivals will be. This will include some teams from Central America as well as teams from the Caribbean. Who we will have, we still do not know at this point in time.”
The win entitles Belize to join Bermuda, St. Lucia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Bahamas and the Dominican Republic in the World Cup qualifying draw 30 July in Rio de Janeiro.
The Football Federation of Belize was forced to play the return match on neutral ground much to the dismay of Belizeans who were expecting the game to be played in Belize. But the FFB is currently the target of Belize government interference that has been placing as much obstacles as possible to prevent FFB matches to be played in Belize.
