Belize Government Censors Independent TV Station

The Government of Belize this past Tuesday sent out a press release informing the general public that they were “suspending normal relations with Channel 5”.  Channel Five is Belize’s premier television station and is watched by a large percentage of the citizens of this nation.

Belize City, with the largest concentration of residents of the country, has one other major television station.  That station, Channel Seven was founded by a prominent UDP family and still is, without a doubt, UDP owned and controlled.  Both Love FM and Kremandala have television licenses but are light years away from presenting any serious competition or from even being considered as legitimate television stations.  There are a few smaller stations around the country but for the most part, the nation gets its news and views from either Channel Five or Channel Seven. Canadian Woman Rescued In Belize Waters

A Canadian woman was rescued in Belize territorial waters after undergoing a harrowing experience with sea pirates in neighboring Honduras. Honduran authorities still have no suspects for Thursday night’s demise of fifty-five year old Milan Egrmajer. The Canadian consulting engineer and sailor lost his life on his yacht Adena while he and his daughter, twenty four year old Myda sheltered from a storm in a lagoon in El Diamante off the coast of Honduras.

Myda has since travelled to northern Ontario. Her father’s body was discovered inside the boat Adena by Honduran authorities on Friday, after she managed to ward off the attackers allegedly using a flare gun. The occupants of the Tessa PG oil tanker that was leaving Honduras for Belize picked up the  young woman and brought her to shore where local authorities took a statement from her. Chevron Withdraws From Belize

Petroleum multinational  Chevron Corporation (CVX) has announced it is withdrawing from the fuel distribution business in Belize and several other Central American and Caribbean countries. Chevron operates a fuel depot and 10 gas stations in Belize through its subsidiary Texaco. [Read more...]

Max The Belize Jaguar Who Escaped Hurricane Recaptured

Max, the Belize jaguar that escaped from his enclosure in Western Belize during hurricane Richard, has been recaptured. Max was under the care of wildlife cinematographers Richard and Carol Foster at their animal rescue center near the Belize Zoo. Carol Foster told the media today that Max returned to his enclosure last night around 9:30 and was trapped and sedated. Belize Forestry Department officials decided to immediately euthanize the endangered cat and this was done and his body taken away by government employees. Max was implicated in the demise of a Belize American man Bruce Cullerton who lived near the animal rescue center.

Jaguar Escaped During Hurricane Mauls Man In Belize

A four year old male jaguar that escaped from an animal rescue center in Belize during hurricane Richard is believed to have caused the demise of a 47 year old man authorities have confirmed. The jaguar, Max, escaped from his enclosure at the animal rescue center when a tree fell and damaged his cage. The victim is a long time resident of Belize, Bruce Cullerton, who held dual Belize-U.S. nationality. [Read more...]

Government of Belize Issues Tropical Storm Warning On Richard

The governments of Honduras, Belize and Mexico have issued Tropical Watch Advisories for their coastal areas as Tropical Storm Richard approaches the Central American mainland. The National Hurricane Center in Miami in its Tropical Storm Richard Advisory number 8 at 5:00 PM EDT on Friday October 22 1020 advised that Richard is slowly intensifying.
