After all the preparation and anticipation, the big day has come and gone and soon it will be time to undo all that has been done.  There is one last hooray however, before the festivities depart and that is as we usher in the New Year and prepare for Belize Maya 2012.

The New Year 2012 finds many people at a peculiar crossroad between jubilation and foreboding.   The New Year is always reason for jubilation as, if only in a figurative sense, we are able to put behind us the mistakes of the past and make way for new goals and new beginnings. The New Year however, is not like any other and some apocalypse adherents believe it will surpass even the dreaded Y2K in terms of portents and dire possibilities.

Malice, Mischief Or Misunderstanding

Audfrey Matura BelizeWhile I have refrained to use this column to speak about the work of Oceana in Belize – I find it necessary to make some clarifications because if the people would understand the big picture some of the misinformation being sent around would never stay alive.

Now it is time to kill it… and of course hopefully in the process the mischief-makers being paid to propagate the ignorance would feel some shame if they even have any such inkling in their being.

Malice

It appears more and more to me that the loud, obnoxious and petty mouthpiece of the ruling party is acting out of malice when they intentionally spew untruths like venom from the mouth of a snake.  What else could it be after I have gone at lengths to explain to them individually, personally and even on their own station?  I do not want to believe it is dumbness…since from the mood, wording and tone it stinks of malice.

Belize – The Dark Side Of Paradise

motor vehicle inspecton shack

Abandoned attempt to privatize motor vehicle inspections in Belize.

I had the good fortune to spend a few hours with Clinton Uh Luna at the library the other day. I find his articles in the Amandala  thought provoking and interesting and requested a meeting. When I saw him he was wearing a blue and red color combination and naturally I made a humorous political comment, he responded by saying he was a member of the PUDP, a fictitious amalgam of the two parties in Belize. Well partly, but more the political statement of a 67 year old self appointed activist “radical”.

To say he was not happy with the political state of affairs of his country would be an understatement. He related a shameful story of gross impropriety on the part of a UDP minister and rampant corruption at all levels and departments, not to mention misappropriation of funds. And just when I thought that this was only a PUP pastime. You see I heard through the grapevine that the previous leadership specialized in monetary mismanagement. Rumor has it the Swiss donated $10,000 to build a bridge over the New River on the way to Progressso/Copper Bank. That never happened as the funds were allocated elsewhere. Over the years I have been here I looked forward to the days when the totalitarian PUP run by Said Musa would be removed from power and responsible government would take its place. Not so simple.

Belize Government Trying To Sell Off Expropriated TELCO

The Belize government’s attempts to close a quick deal with a strategic partner for a 45% stake in the country’s nationalized multimillion dollar telecommunication company, Belize Telemedia Limited, will have to wait at least another two months, BTL’s Chairman Nestor Vasquez said this week.

Despite a firm purchase offer made by investors from Argentina, the Government of Belize will not see the sale of BTL through until June or July.
